Leptin negatively regulates thyroid function of Wistar rats

Abstract Leptin plays a major role in the regulation of energy intake and expenditure, triggering effects on several tissues, such as hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. The reported leptin thyroid are controversial, being mainly explored during imbalance. Therefore, aim this study was to evaluate function rats fed ad libitum distinguishing direct responses from those mediated by leptin-dependent suppression food comparing leptin-treated (L) with pair-fed (PF) animals. administration resulted decrease 10% intake. Reduced mass gain observed both L PF groups. decreased serum corticosterone, which did not occur group. TSH levels were reduced group, but Both animals presented iodide uptake type 1 deiodinase (D1) activity gland. A D1 also found PCCl3 rat cell lineage treated leptin. Taken together data suggest that exerts paradoxical effects: stimulatory effect axis increasing while directly inhibiting thyrocyte TSH-independent fashion.
